lily

Have you ever wondered why is The Lily of the valley  often referred to Jesus? Though the Bible has no direct writings about it,  The lily of the valley was mentioned in the Bible for 15 times  in 15 different verses. Some of the popular verses in the Holy Bible are:

1.   Song of Solomon 2:1 I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.

2. Hosea 14:5 I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.

3. Matthew 6:28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Having heard and read these verses, It is really a big question why is the lily of the valley used and not any other flowering plant around. Is it the only flowering plant available in those times. Certainly not, maybe this would give us answer to our question.

While most of the Bible scholars and students agree that the lily of the valley in Solomon 2:1 symbolizes the Lord Jesus, here are some proof that could give us an insight. Summary points in Benjamin Keach book:

1. In the book of Ephesians in the New Testament of the Holy Bible says:Ephesians 5: 2 “and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”- A lily is a sweet and a flagrant flower with a strong scent.

2. From the Bible we will find these: (Revelation 3:4). The bride of the Lamb will be clothed in white (Revelation 19:8). What better representation of the purity of Jesus Christ, the one “who knew no sin” (2 Corinthians 5:21), who “did no sin” (1 Peter 2:22), who was tempted “yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15), and who “in him is no sin” (1 John 3:5), than a beautiful white lily? “For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens” (Hebrews 7:26). – A lily is white and very beautiful; exceeding all other flowers for whiteness.

3. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, He brings forth much fruit (John 12:24). It is by bearing much fruit that He glorified the Father (John 15:8). – A lily is very fruitful. One root may put forth fifty bulbs.

4. In the book of Philippians chapter 2 verses 6-8 says:”Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” The lily is the tallest of flowers and yet hangs its head down. This a beautiful picture of the greatness of the Son of God, so great yet humbled himself to die on the cross.

5. The Lord Jesus Christ is the great physician and is fully capable of curing all diseases and problems of the soul. The lily of the valley roughly has 38 different cardiac glycosides (cardenolides) found in the plant. Cardiac glycosides are used therapeutically mainly in the treatment of cardiac failure.

Now having known and read this writings i am fully persuaded that Jesus Christ is the Lily of the valley.

The lily of the valley is a composition by Charles W. Fry in 1881.

The Lily of the valley lyrics:

I have found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley, in Him alone I see
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay;
He tells me every care on Him to roll.

Refrain

He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

He all my grief has taken, and all my sorrows borne;
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tower;
I have all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn
From my heart and now He keeps me by His power.
Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt me sore,
Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.

Refrain

He will never, never leave me, nor yet forsake me here,
While I live by faith and do His blessèd will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear,
From His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory to see His blessèd face,
Where the rivers of delight shall ever roll.

Refrain
